Climate

In the capital the average highest daily temperature in July is 22.1°C (71.7ºF), average lowest daily temperature in July is 12.3°C (54.1ºF). Average highest daily temperature in January is -3.5°C (25.7ºF) whereas lowest average daily temperature in January is -8.7°C (16.3ºF). Typically there are several very hot weeks in summers (with daytime temperatures surpassing 30°C/86ºF) and one or two very cold weeks in winter (with night time temperatures going under -20°C/-4ºF). Close to the coast the winters are milder and the summers are cooler, but the difference does not exceed a couple of degrees.

This country has four very vivid seasons. It gives Salaspils its own beauty as nature paints itself in different colors. Contrary to popular belief winters are not perpetually white, but you have high chances of encountering heavy snow if you visit in January or February. The autumns are universally yellow, red, and brown - colorful, as the leaves of the trees prepare to fall. The springs and summers are green, although during the droughts everything may start gaining a yellow shade earlier.

There are no natural disasters like volcanoes, earthquakes or tornadoes. Forest fires do happen, but they are minor. The cold of winter takes its toll sometimes but this is limited to the homeless. Heavy rains and strong winds do some damage, but usually only to the property and crops and this damage is also minor.

1-400

115-120 NE: Unknown to the majority of the population, a foreign faith starts to spread in the southeastern edge of the lands.

141 NE: The foreign faith continues to spread in the region that what would become Nassau.

220-314 NE: A foreign power makes regular raids along the coast of the westernmost areas of the developing nation, attacks which continue for some time.

290 NE: Armies from what is today Nassau are slaughtered. A new power was able to expand to the borders of southeast Salaspils. Their leader, calling himself 'Sultan' decided to offer peace if the Grand Duke would give one of his daughters for the Sultan's son to marry. The Grand Duke agreed to give one of his noble daughters, however the Grand Duke actually sent the daughter of House Olbrich which was one of his vassals, whom was also blamed for going to war without permission. Passing off this woman as the Grand Duke's own daughter. The Sultan bought it and peace was secured.

295 NE: Word finally reaches Salaspils of the executions carried out a four years prior, though little attention is heed is paid to it as it wasn't one of the Grand Duke's own family.

325-330 NE: The Liberation of Lichtenau. An opportunity arrives when Geiseinheim with aid from San Severo seek to form a united assault against Charkhi Dadri to reclaim the lands of Lichtenau. This is agreed to by the Grand Duke as it will allow an unfamiliar foreign power to be driven from their own borders, leaving Geisenheim and Lichtenau to bother with them. The war proves a success and Salaspils returns their force to their own lands once more.

340-350 NE: This becomes an era of relative peace across all known nations, largely as they all start to rebuild their respective powerbases, militaries, economies, or the like.

350 NE: The foreign religious movement in the southeast grows strong enough to stand on it's own, and isolating themselves in the lands they viewed as theirs, they petition for recognition from the Council of Dieu Soleil which is granted, resulting in the traitors becoming the Dukedom of Nassau.

350-353 NE: The War of Retribution. After the recognition of Nassau as a sovereign nation, and the belief the Olometist nations were stealing lands that rightfully belonged to Salaspils, the northern nation declared war. Seeking to reclaim the territory of the newly formed Nassau, the Salaspils people sought to either kill or drive out all Olometists from their lands by force. Nassau resisted the attempts and drawing on their close connections with Geisenheim and Lichtenau. By 351 NE Chantour joins the fray as well. The war finally comes to an end when Salaspils sues for peace, the Council fo Dieu Soleil agrees, and all Olometist nations are called to cease hostilities after it is agreed that Salaspils will recognize the independence of Nassau, returning all lands to that nation that might be held, and in return all territory that was part of Salaspils that does not include Nassau will be return to Salaspils without issue. This ultimately saves Salaspils as the Olometist forces had conquered a large chunk of Salaspils, and could have easily kept their claim. If ther war had continued much longer there is little doubt Salaspils would have ceased to exist as a nation.

400-800

403 NE: Salaspils fully recovers after the Northern Wars both economically and also in terms of their population. The nation returns to the international stage stronger than they were even before the war.

453 NE: A new threat from the cold wastes to the east strike. Salaspils withdraws to preserve the majority of their forces, while also ensuring enough survivors to learn more about the tactics and technology of this new enemy. Lands on the easternmost edge of Salaspils is claimed by this new power, the Sharya, but they don't proceed very far west.

455 NE: Forces from Sharya turns south and claims a foothold in northern Nassau, Salaspils looks to securing their own border and waits for the clash that will come. Knowing from experience how the Olometists fight, they leave the foreigners to eliminate the threat of the Sharya.

456 NE: With the forces from Sharya on the verge of defeat, Salaspils sends in their own forces to free the few lands the new threat had claimed three years prior. Effectively a mop-up effort Salaspils quickly regains their lands, even as Nassau lays claim to territory along the eastern border of Salaspils, but at least it creates a buffer between Salaspils and the Sharya in the future.

Government

A grand duchy is a country or territory whose official head of state or ruler is a monarch bearing the title of grand duke or grand duchess. Salaspils follows hereditary monarchy, where the crown is passed down from one member of the royal family to another. The House of Jansons is the only royal family as far as history remembers in the Grand Duchy of Salaspils.

As some other countries, it employs a male primogeniture order of succession. The monarch's eldest son and his descendants take precedence over his siblings and their descendants. Elder sons take precedence over younger sons, but all sons take precedence over all daughters. Children represent their deceased ancestors, and the senior line of descent always takes precedence over the junior line, within each gender. The right of succession belongs to the eldest son of the reigning sovereign, and then to the eldest son of the eldest son.
