Religion

Hofsians believe in Eldur and Tungl. Eldur is understood as the Goddess of Fire. Tungl is the God of Moon. They both are known as Dyrlingur Tveir. Literal translation would be Saint Two, but it is believed that they have in mind Saint Duo or Saint Duet. It is believed that the world was created by Tungl as a gift to his beloved wife Eldur.

Their love was pure and their life was happy and full of joy. However, Tungl was a very intelligent man whose greater passions were knowledge and art. He wanted to explore the limits of his powers. He felt as if the gift was not finished, that something more could be done with the world. He wanted to create something more. That is why he made trees and rivers, oceans and the wind. He sought perfection.

It is believed that Eldur grew sad and started to feel lonely. She didn't have anyone to talk to. So his wife wouldn't disturb Tungl, he decided to create her someone to talk to - a human. He made the human according to his own image. He grew even more proud of his abilities to create and he went into more details, creating animals and birds.

During that time Eldur indulged into long conversations with the First Human, Josavin. She grew apart from the moon and fell in love with Josavin. They became lovers and it brought a hardship upon the relationship between Eldur and Tungl. Eldur became pregnant.

Tungl went mad. He loved her so much and could not understand her betrayal. He hated her and his creation - human. So, he banished them both to the World, he was creating. He broke Eldur's heart, making her as hot as fire, that her lover would never be able to touch her. If she would try to touch him - he would burn. She gave birth to children, but was never able to touch them either.

That is the story of the Dyrlingur Tveir, the God and Goddess to whom Hofsians pray. They believe that the love between Eldur and Tungl had never truly gone away. It was a moment of unchangeable rage. That is why the Moon is now watching over his Eldur on Earth. Since everything was created by him, he determines destiny. He rules the lives of all creatures including humans, nature, the rain and wind, floods and ebbs. He is the father, who loves and cares for all but humans. He still sees them as broken creations and that is why the goal of humans is to prove that they have no flaws and are worthy of eternal life by his side on the moon.

Eldur is the Mother, who can plead for humans to the moon. They were born from her and that is why they die with her. That is why Hofsians burn the bodies of their dead.
